Face shape detector

Find your face shape from a photo in seconds. It runs on your device, so your photo is never uploaded, and it tells you which haircut, beard and glasses suit the shape.

Find your face shape from a photo

Your photo never leaves this device: it is measured here, in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or stored.

Best results: face the camera, head level, hair off the forehead, glasses off, even light, phone at arm’s length or further.

How the detector finds your face shape

It places 468 points on your face, then measures four things: the width of your forehead, your cheekbones and your jaw, and the length from hairline to chin. The length against the width decides between long and short shapes; which of the three widths is largest decides the rest. It also checks whether the corners of your jaw are angular or rounded, which separates square from round. The photo stays in your browser the whole time.

The seven face shapes

ShapeHow to recognise it, and the haircut that suits it
OvalLonger than it is wide, with the forehead slightly wider than a softly rounded jaw. The most balanced outline: most cuts work. Haircut: Almost anything: a textured crop, a quiff, a side part or longer hair. Choose by hair type and upkeep rather than shape.
RoundAbout as wide as it is long, with full cheeks and a soft, rounded jaw. Haircut: Height on top and shorter sides: a textured quiff, a mid or high fade, or an angular fringe swept to one side.
SquareForehead, cheekbones and jaw about the same width, with a strong, angular jaw. Haircut: A textured top with tapered sides, or a classic side part. A little softness on top balances the jaw.
OblongClearly longer than it is wide, with a straight forehead, cheeks and jaw. Haircut: Keep some width at the sides and avoid extra height: a fringe, a side part, or a low taper.
HeartA wider forehead and cheekbones narrowing to a pointed or narrow chin. Haircut: Medium length with some fullness at the sides, and a fringe or side part that softens the forehead.
DiamondCheekbones clearly the widest point, with a narrower forehead and jaw. Haircut: Fullness at the forehead and a fringe or textured top; keep the sides from getting too short.
TriangleA jaw wider than the forehead, with the face widening toward the bottom. Haircut: Volume and width on top and at the temples: a textured quiff or a fuller side part.

Prefer a tape measure?

The face shape guide has a calculator that uses four measurements you take in a mirror, and explains each shape in detail. Then read the haircut, beard and glasses guides for your shape.

Questions

How does the face shape detector work?
It finds 468 points on your face in the photo, measures the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw and the length of your face, and compares them. The same rule as the manual face shape calculator then names the closest of the seven shapes.
Is my photo uploaded or stored?
No. The photo is read and measured in your browser, on your device. It is never sent to LEVEL or anyone else, and it is gone when you close the page.
How accurate is a face shape detector?
It is a good first answer, not a measurement. Most faces sit between two shapes, and the angle, distance and lighting of a photo change the proportions. If the result says you are close to another shape, read both.
What photo works best?
A straight-on photo with your head level, hair off your forehead, glasses off, even light, and the phone at arm's length or further. A selfie held close makes the middle of the face look wider.
What are the seven face shapes?
Oval, round, square, oblong, heart, diamond and triangle. They are coarse labels for proportions: how long the face is against its width, and which of forehead, cheekbones and jaw is widest.
What should I do once I know my face shape?
Use it to choose a haircut, beard and glasses that balance it. The guides cover each shape; a LEVEL Preview goes further and shows the changes on your own photo.

Face shape is a coarse guide to proportions, not a measure of how anyone looks. LEVEL never rates faces. The detector describes an outline so you can choose a haircut, beard and glasses.

THE PRODUCT BEHIND THIS PAGE

LEVEL turns seven private photographs into a plan, not a score.

A confidence-aware presentation profile, a preview of your best look and a twelve-week plan. No rating, no ranking, nothing surgical. Photographs are destroyed after twelve months and never train a model.
