FACE SHAPE ANALYSIS

What face shape am I? AI face shape analysis

Face shape is the most common starting point for choosing a haircut, glasses or a beard, and the most commonly misread. Here is how the seven shapes really work, how LEVEL reads your proportions from photographs, and what it does with the answer.

What are the face shapes?

Most guides use seven shapes: oval, round, square, oblong, heart, diamond and triangle. Each is a shorthand for two things: how long your face is compared with its width, and which of three widths is largest, your forehead, your cheekbones or your jaw. An oval face is longer than it is wide, with a forehead slightly wider than a softly rounded jaw. A round face is about as wide as it is long. A square face has forehead, cheekbones and jaw of similar width with angular jaw corners. An oblong face is clearly longer than it is wide. A heart face narrows from a wide forehead to the chin, a diamond face is widest at the cheekbones, and a triangle face is widest at the jaw.

The labels are useful because they predict what a haircut, a beard or a frame will do to your outline. Short sides make a face read narrower; length at the chin makes it read longer; a strong top line on glasses adds structure where a face is soft. Knowing your shape tells you which of those effects you want.

Most faces are a mix

Real faces rarely sit in one box. Proportions vary continuously, so many people sit between two shapes, oval and oblong, or round and square, and studies of face-shape classification find that even trained observers disagree on borderline faces. A photo also changes the answer: a camera held close widens the middle of the face, and a tilted head shortens or lengthens it. So treat your shape as a direction, not a diagnosis. If you are between two shapes, the advice for both usually overlaps, and the overlap is the safest place to start.

That is also why LEVEL never gives a face a score. A face shape describes an outline so you can choose a haircut, a beard and glasses. It is not a measure of how anyone looks, and no shape is better than another.

How LEVEL reads your proportions

LEVEL works from seven guided photos: front neutral, front smiling, left and right three-quarter, left and right profile, and a view of the hairline from above. The app checks light, sharpness, framing and head angle on your phone before anything is uploaded, so a poor photo is retaken rather than misread. From those views LEVEL describes your outline, the visible width at the forehead, cheekbones and jaw, your hair's length, texture and volume, your beard's growth and lines, and the frames you wear, each with a confidence level. Anything the photos do not show clearly is withheld rather than guessed.

One photo can only show one angle. Seven views show how the jaw turns, where the hairline sits and how the sides of your hair lie, which is what a barber or optician actually looks at. If you only want a quick answer from a single photo, the free face shape detector measures your shape in your browser without uploading anything.

What LEVEL suggests for your shape

The point of knowing your shape is what you do next. LEVEL turns your proportions, your hair and your beard into a small number of reversible changes: a named haircut with the clipper numbers to ask for, a beard length and where its cheek line and neckline should sit, and the frame width and shape that suit you. Each one comes with why it suits you, what to avoid, and what to say at the barber or optician.

You then see the result: one best-look preview that applies those changes to your own photo, with your face, skin and expression left exactly as they are. Every preview is labelled as AI-generated. The hairstyle for your face page explains the preview in more detail, and the haircut by face shape guide covers each shape on its own.

What it does not do

LEVEL does not rate, rank or score faces, does not suggest surgery or anything that changes bone structure, and does not change your face in a preview. Its suggestions are hair, beard, brows, glasses, skin routine and clothing: things you can undo. You can read why on the face analysis without a rating page, and how your photos are handled on the privacy page.

Questions

What face shape am I?
Compare your face's length with its width, then see which of forehead, cheekbones and jaw is widest. Longer than wide with a soft jaw is oval; about as long as wide is round or square; widest at the cheekbones is diamond. Most faces sit between two shapes.
How does AI face shape analysis work?
It locates your forehead, cheekbones, jaw and the length of your face in photographs and compares their proportions. LEVEL uses seven guided views and reports a confidence for each observation, withholding anything the photos do not show clearly.
Is a face shape analysis accurate?
It is a good guide, not a measurement. Camera distance and head angle change proportions, and many faces sit between shapes. Guided photos taken at arm's length or further give the most reliable reading.
Does LEVEL rate my face?
No. LEVEL never gives an attractiveness score, rating or ranking. It describes your outline only to choose a haircut, beard and glasses.
