COLOR ANALYSIS

Personal color analysis from a photo

Which colours suit you depends mostly on contrast: how light or dark your hair, skin and eyes are against each other. Here is how colour analysis works, what a photo can and cannot tell you, and what LEVEL gives you.

What personal color analysis is

Personal colour analysis matches the colours you wear near your face to your natural colouring. Two things matter most. The first is value contrast: how light or dark your hair is against your skin, and your eyes against both. High contrast, such as dark hair and light skin, carries strong contrast in clothing well, like navy with white. Low contrast, such as light hair and light skin, looks balanced in softer, closer tones. The second is undertone: whether your skin leans warm, neutral or cool, which nudges you toward warmer or cooler versions of a colour.

Many systems sort people into seasons with dozens of named colours. LEVEL does not, because a season is a fixed box and a photo cannot place you in one reliably. It builds a small capsule instead: a few neutrals and a few accents you can actually buy and combine.

What a photo can and cannot tell you

Depth survives a camera well: whether your hair, skin and eyes read light, medium or dark is stable across most phones and lighting. Undertone does not. A camera's white balance, a warm lamp or a north-facing window can shift skin from warm to cool in a single shot. That is why colour analysis from one selfie is often wrong.

LEVEL handles this by checking first whether the lighting was consistent across your seven guided photos. It reports undertone only when the lighting matched in every view and the undertone read the same in all of them. Otherwise it says the undertone could not be read, and builds your palette from contrast alone. It never names a colour you must avoid; a colour is either used with care or less useful near your face, with the visual reason.

Seven photos. Your profile, your best look on your own photo, and what to do next. No score, nothing surgical. $19 once.

What LEVEL's colour analysis gives you

From your photos LEVEL reads the depth of your hair, skin and eye colour, the contrast between them, and your undertone when the light allows. From those it builds a capsule palette in two tiers. Neutrals come from your contrast level and are the most reliable part: the base colours for tops, outerwear and trousers. Accents come from your undertone and appear only when it was read with confidence. Each colour comes with how to use it and what to pair it with, plus a few ready combinations of base, secondary and accent.

The palette is part of your report alongside your haircut, beard and glasses recommendations, because colour near the face works together with them: a beard, dark frames or a strong collar all change your contrast. If clothing is one of your priorities, your report includes a go-to outfit built from your own palette.

How to get a better reading

Take the photos in daylight from a window in front of you, not behind or above. Turn off filters and beauty modes, avoid coloured walls close to you, and wear a plain top in a neutral colour so it does not reflect onto your skin. Keep the same light for all seven views. The app checks brightness and sharpness before uploading; consistent light is what lets the undertone be read.

Limits, honestly

This is a visual reading of photographs, not calibrated colour measurement, and LEVEL says so in your report. It does not judge skin tone, never suggests changing it, and never uses colour to rate a face. The palette is a starting point for what to wear, not a rule. You can also read how your photos are stored on the privacy page, and what else the analysis covers on face shape analysis.

Questions

What colors suit me?
Colours that match your contrast: strong contrast if your hair, skin and eyes differ a lot in depth, softer tones if they are close. Undertone then nudges you toward warmer or cooler versions.
Can you do color analysis from a photo?
Partly. Depth and contrast read reliably from photos; undertone often does not, because lighting and white balance shift it. LEVEL reports undertone only when the light was consistent across all seven photos.
Does LEVEL tell me my season?
No. It builds a small capsule palette of neutrals and accents instead of a seasonal type, because a photo cannot reliably place you in a season.
Is the colour analysis included in the Preview?
Yes. The palette is part of the report that comes with the $19 Preview, when your photos give enough to build it.
