Patchy beard: how to fix it with length and lines

How to make a patchy beard look full: the length that hides gaps, where to set the cheek line and neckline, which styles work, and what oils cannot do.

Three questions, answered in the browser. Nothing leaves this page.

How does your beard grow after three or four weeks?
How much time will you give it each week?

Answer all three to see a starting style and trimmer setting.

01

How do I fix a patchy beard?

You fix how a patchy beard looks with length and lines, not with products. Grow it untouched for four to six weeks so the slower areas catch up, then trim everything to the one length at which the gaps stop showing, usually 6 to 12 mm. Set the cheek line lower, just below where the cheek hair turns sparse, and shave the thin hairs above it, so the beard has a clear edge over dense growth instead of a faint, uneven one. Finally set a clean neckline about two fingers above the Adam's apple. Most beards that look patchy at stubble length look full and deliberate once they are one even length with a low, clean cheek line.

02

Why is my beard patchy?

Mostly genetics and age. Beard hair responds to hormones differently from person to person, and many people's beards keep filling in through their twenties and into their early thirties. Cheeks and the area between the moustache and the chin are usually the last to fill. Patchiness is common and is not a sign that anything is wrong. Sudden round bald patches in a beard that used to be full, or patches with redness, scaling or itching, are different: those are worth showing to a doctor or dermatologist.

What length hides the gaps?

Longer hair lies over the gaps beside it, so a little length does most of the work. The picker above shows the lengths side by side.

LengthHow it looks on a patchy beard
Stubble, 1–3 mmShows every gap. Works only if you keep it very short and even everywhere, so the pattern reads as shadow rather than patches.
Short beard, 6–12 mmThe sweet spot for most patchy beards: long enough to cover small gaps, short enough to stay neat.
Medium, 15–25 mmCovers larger gaps on the cheeks if the chin and jaw are dense. Needs shaping so it does not look uneven at the edges.
Long, 30 mm and overCan hide a lot, but only if the growth is long enough everywhere; otherwise the thin areas look stringy.
04

Where should I set the cheek line on a patchy beard?

Lower than you think. Find where the cheek hair turns from dense to sparse and set the line just below it, in a natural curve from the sideburn to the corner of the moustache. Shave everything above it clean. A beard with a crisp edge over dense hair reads fuller than a beard that fades out into scattered hairs high on the cheek. Do not draw a line higher to make the beard look bigger: a high line over thin growth makes the gaps more obvious.

05

Which beard styles work best for a patchy beard?

Styles that put the length where your growth is densest.

StyleWhy it works
Short boxed beardEven length, low cheek line, clean neckline: the most reliable look for a patchy beard.
Defined goateeIf the cheeks are thin but the chin and moustache are full, keep only those and shave the cheeks clean.
Short even stubbleIf the gaps are large, a very short, even stubble reads as a deliberate shadow.
Chin-strap or anchorFollows the jaw or the chin, where growth is usually densest. Needs regular edging.
06

Do beard oil, minoxidil or derma rolling work?

Beard oil and balm make the hair softer and tidier and the skin less itchy, which helps a beard look fuller, but they do not make more hair grow. Minoxidil is a medicine; the evidence for its use on beards comes from small trials, and it should be discussed with a doctor before you try it, because it is used on the face for months and can irritate the skin. Derma rolling is promoted for beard growth with very little evidence. The changes in this guide work with the hair you have, today, and cost nothing but a trimmer.

07

How do I keep a patchy beard looking full?

Trim the whole beard to the same length every week or two, because the dense areas grow faster and make the sparse areas look thinner. Re-shave the cheek line and the neckline every three or four days. Brush it in the direction of growth so the hair lies over the gaps, and use a little balm to hold it there. Wash it with a gentle cleanser two or three times a week. If you want to see your own beard trimmed this way before you do it, a LEVEL Preview shows it on your photo.

Quick answers

Will a patchy beard fill in?
Often, yes, especially before your early thirties. Grow it for four to six weeks before judging, because slower areas need time to catch up.
Should I shave a patchy beard?
Not before trying one even length of 6 to 12 mm with a lower cheek line. If the gaps still show, a clean shave or short even stubble looks more deliberate.
Does shaving make a beard grow thicker?
No. Shaving cuts the hair at the surface; it does not change the follicle, how many hairs grow or how thick they are.
What beard style suits a patchy beard?
A short boxed beard: one even length, a low cheek line and a clean neckline. If only the chin is full, a goatee with clean cheeks.
