Mewing: what it is, does it work, and what to do instead

What mewing is, what the evidence says about changing an adult jaw, why the before-and-after photos convince, and the changes that do sharpen a jawline.

01

What is mewing?

Mewing is resting the whole tongue flat against the roof of the mouth, lips closed and teeth lightly together, for as much of the day as possible. It is named after the orthodontist John Mew and his son Mike Mew, who promote "orthotropics", the idea that tongue and jaw posture guide how the face grows. Online it is sold as a way to get a sharper, more defined jawline and a more forward face, usually with dramatic before-and-after photographs.

02

Does mewing work?

There is no good evidence that mewing changes the bone structure of an adult face. By adulthood the jaw and face have finished growing, and no controlled study has shown tongue posture reshaping them. Researchers who have studied the looksmaxxing movement describe mewing as lacking evidence, and orthodontists treat tongue posture as one factor in how children's faces develop, not as a way for adults to remodel bone. What mewing can change is how you hold your head, neck and jaw, which changes how a jawline looks in a photograph. That is posture, not structure, and it disappears when you relax.

See it on your own face before you change anything. A LEVEL Preview picks the haircut, beard and glasses that suit you from seven private photos, shows them on your own photo, and gives you the exact words for your barber and optician. $19, once.

Why do mewing before-and-after photos look so convincing?

Because almost everything else changes between the two photos. The camera is held further away in the after shot, which narrows the middle of the face; the head is tilted down in one and lifted in the other, which hides or stretches the neck; the light comes from the side, which carves shadows under the jaw; the person has lost weight, grown a beard or flexed the jaw muscles. Any one of these makes a jawline look sharper. Take two photos of yourself a minute apart, one chin-down and close, one chin-forward and further away, and you will see the same "result" with no mewing at all.

04

Is mewing harmful?

Gentle resting tongue posture is unlikely to hurt. Pushing hard, clenching, or holding the jaw tensed for hours can cause jaw, face and neck pain, headaches and tooth wear, and "hard mewing" and "bone smashing" are the riskier extremes promoted alongside it. If you have jaw pain, clicking, headaches, or worries about your bite or breathing, see a dentist or orthodontist rather than trying to fix it with posture.

05

What actually makes a jawline look sharper?

The reversible changes that do change how a jawline reads, today.

ChangeWhat it does
A beard with a clean necklineA short boxed beard or heavy stubble with the neckline set about two fingers above the Adam's apple draws a jaw where the neck meets the face. Usually the single biggest change.
Shorter sides on the haircutA taper or fade removes width beside the face, so the lower face reads more defined. See taper vs fade.
Head and neck postureStanding tall with the chin slightly forward, not tucked, shows the jawline in person, not just in photos.
Body fatLower body fat sharpens the jaw and neck more than any facial exercise. Training and diet are slow but real.
The right collarA structured collar or a crew neck that sits close frames the jaw; a stretched neckline softens it.
Photo techniqueCamera at eye level, an arm's length or further, light from the front and side. It is how most "after" photos are taken.
06

Should I try mewing anyway?

If you enjoy it and it causes no pain, resting your tongue on the roof of your mouth is harmless, and many people find it improves how they hold their head. Just do not expect your bone structure to change, and do not let it replace the changes that work. If you want to see which beard, haircut and collar would sharpen your own jawline, a LEVEL Preview shows them on your photo, without a score and without changing your face.

Quick answers

Can mewing change your jawline?
Not the bone, in adults: there is no good evidence for it. It can change your head and jaw posture, which changes how your jawline looks in photos while you hold it.
How long does mewing take to work?
Claims range from weeks to years, but there is no evidence that it changes adult bone at any timescale. Changes in photos within days are posture and camera angle.
Is mewing bad for your teeth?
Gentle tongue posture is unlikely to harm them. Clenching or pressing hard for hours can wear teeth and strain the jaw; see a dentist if you have pain or clicking.
What is the fastest way to get a sharper jawline?
A short beard or stubble with a clean neckline, and a haircut with shorter sides. Both change how the jaw reads the same day and can be undone.
